What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that websites store on your device. They help websites remember your settings and understand how you use them.
Session cookies are temporary and are deleted when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them. First-party cookies are set by the website you visit, third-party cookies by other services embedded in the page.
How we use cookies
Gemhog uses cookies and similar storage mechanisms for three purposes:
- Essential functions — keeping you signed in and remembering your essential cookie settings
- Optional functional/preference cookies (with your consent) — e.g. remembering the sign-in method you used last
- Analytics (with your consent) — understanding how visitors use the site so that we can improve it
Cookie categories
Strictly necessary (no consent required)
These cookies are required for the website to work and cannot be disabled.
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
__Host-gemhog.session_token | Sign-in session — keeps you signed in | 7 days (rolling) | API host only, HTTP-only, Secure, Path=/, SameSite=Lax |
gemhog.cookie_consent | Stores your cookie consent decision | 1 year | First-party cookie, readable by JS, Path=/, SameSite=Lax, Secure on HTTPS pages served |
gemhog.locale | Remembers the language you last viewed on gemhog.com so that the app and new accounts start in that language | 1 year | First-party cookie, set on gemhog.com and shared with app.gemhog.com, readable by JS, Path=/, SameSite=Lax, Secure on HTTPS pages served |
sidebar_state | Remembers whether the sidebar is open | 7 days | First-party cookie |
The session is stored as a signed HTTP-only cookie on the API host only.
JavaScript cannot read it; when you visit pre-release or preview environments,
it is not sent to their servers. The gemhog.cookie_consent cookie is
necessary so that we can store and respect your cookie decision.
Optional functional/preference cookies (consent required)
These cookies make the service easier to use but are not required for sign-in or your session. They are only set or read with your consent.
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
better-auth.last_used_login_method | Remembers the sign-in method you used last | 30 days | First-party cookie, readable by JS |
Analytics without persistent browser storage (consent required)
With your consent, we use PostHog to analyze page views and the use of our features. In the browser, PostHog keeps its analytics data in memory only, not in cookies or persistent browser storage. The anonymous analytics identifier is not kept when you reload the page. If you are signed in, analytics events may still be associated with your user account. You can find information on how long submitted events are stored in our Privacy Policy.
While your decision is pending or if you decline, we do not initialize PostHog and do not send any analytics events. The cookie for the sign-in method you used last is then neither written nor read.
Error tracking
To our current knowledge, Sentry does not set any persistent cookies. Any session data in the browser is not part of this cookie consent control.
| Cookie / storage | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry session data | Error context for the session (breadcrumbs, session ID) | Session only | sessionStorage (browser) |
Support chat (when used)
Chatwoot is only loaded when you actively open the support chat in the application. The following cookies keep the conversation you requested and your signed-in support identity together:
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
cw_conversation | Links the browser to the conversation | 1 year | Chatwoot cookie, SameSite=Lax |
cw_user_<website identifier> | Remembers the signed-in support identity | 1 year | Chatwoot cookie, SameSite=Lax |
If you do not open the support chat, the Chatwoot SDK is not loaded and these cookies are not set. When you sign out, the application resets the Chatwoot identity.
Managing your cookie settings
On your first visit to the marketing site or the application, a cookie banner appears. Your decision applies jointly to our website and the application. Pre-release and preview versions have separate settings. You can change your settings at any time:
- Click "Cookie settings" in the marketing site footer to open the banner again
- Open the cookie settings in the application's user menu when you are signed in
- Block all cookies in your browser settings — this may, however, affect how the service works (you will then not be able to stay signed in)
If you decline or withdraw your consent, we do our best to delete optional cookies. Strictly necessary session and auth cookies are not affected, as the service does not work without them.
Privacy Policy
You can find full details on how we process your personal data in our Privacy Policy.
